Comments:
This is a pretty decent audience recording…almost an EX rating. Overall pretty clear but with some loud crowd noise at times. For some reason though, the date of this show always seemed to be unknown and has always been titled as “Houston 666am”.
UPDATE:
It was thought that after some research, that this was from the show at Woodlands, TX. on 8/30/97 during Buzzfest which is very near the Houston area. But after a video of the show came out on Youtube that clearly was not the case. The setlist is shorter and much different that this show.
Plus the setlist played here matches what was played around the time of June which we can confirm with other recordings around the same time where only that particular intro to Argue was used and that set of songs were played.
Rob does say “What’s up Houston Baby” and mentions playing Houston some months before which would more or less confirm this was after their initial gig on 4/22/97. But the question still stands, when was this? Perhaps we will only know when and if the taper were to emerge and confirm this but that seems unlikely. The title, however, does seem to suggest that this could of been on June 6th…hence the 666am reference. I am not sure where else that would come from but needless to say there is no record of Matchbox 20 playing Houston between 4/22 and 8/30. The June 6th date may be unlikely as well since there is a reference to them playing in Virginia but there is no confirmation of that nor did I have that listed on my original tour dates, so who knows. What I can say is that the band were in Texas around that time for a show on 7/1 in Fort Worth. So it is possible there was another unannounced or last minute show in Houston during that time in June perhaps but close to those dates of 6/6 – 7/1.
With that all being said. This recording seems to be complete and based on the clarity of it, I have to imagine the master was probably from a digital source. The sound dynamics seem like this was an inside venue which is just a guess but it may fit into the timeline of this show and location.
Unfortunately some track ticks/gaps had to be removed and the crowd does spike the recording some so I did fix that. Otherwise, this is a great show to have.
